Overiohysterectomy is the surgical sterilization of the female dog and cat and more commonly referred to as spaying. The surgery involves the removal of the uterus and ovaries and is most commonly performed between 5 and 12 months of age. The recommended age for surgery depends on a number of factors, such as predicted adult size and presence of urinary tract or vaginal infections. For giant breed dogs, such as Saint Bernard’s or Irish Wolfhounds, the recommended age of spaying is often later, around 18 months of age.

The benefits of spaying include prevention of unwanted pregnancy, and the complications that can arise from pregnancy, as well as reduction in risk of mammary cancer, and prevention of uterine infection. Additionally, female cats are very vocal during their heat cycle and can urinate outside their litter box.
